Annual Meeting Speaker Preview: John Phipps

John Phipps, the host of U.S. Farm Report brings his humor and farm commentary to Sioux Falls on Saturday, January 19th for the 27th annual meeting of the South Dakota Corn Growers Association “Backyard BBQ”. Phipps will emcee during the educational seminars and also give a presentation titled, “Agriculture: Prepare for Swan Flew Season.” The term “Black Swan,” refers to a buzzword for highly improbable, hugely consequential events such as 9/11, the Lehman Brothers collapse and even the last few years in agriculture. Phipps will also spend time outlining which risks are worth worrying about and why.

Phipps, a military veteran, actively farms with his family in east-central Illinois. He has served in various positions with the Farm Bureau, Illinois Commission on Atomic Energy, Illinois Corn Marketing Board, and National Corn Congress.

John appears monthly in Farm Journal and Top Producer magazines as a contributing editor. In conjunction with writing, John speaks often to farm and business groups.

Annual Meeting Speaker Preview: Fred Below

Corn farmers are on the chase for 300-bushel corn yields and to get there, they should attend this year’s South Dakota Corn Growers annual meeting to hear agronomy expert Dr. Fred Below, a University of Illinois professor of crop physiology, give his presentation “300 Bushels of Corn,” discussing fertilizer placement and timing for the highest profitability.

He’ll talk about improved soil fertility, the use of advanced triple or smart-stack hybrids, effective nitrogen use, increased plant populations and fungicide to control leaf disease and plant stress.

His areas of expertise include plant physiology, soil fertility, bioenergy crops, grain, crop management, plant breeding and genetic improvements.

His research is focused on understanding factors that limit crop productivity, with particular emphasis on nitrogen use by corn.

He is currently working on the genetic regulation of nitrogen use efficiency, and on adapting variable-rate technologies for nitrogen fertilization of corn.
